BioMed Central Cancellation (repost)

BioMed Central Cancellation

Carpenter Library has cancelled its membership to BioMed Central.

The Library has been a member of the open access publisher since 2003. In 2006, the pricing model changed and faculty or their sponsoring institutions became responsible for publishing fees. The library continued membership through 2007 to give our faculty fair warning of the upcoming cancellation. We sincerely regret any inconvenience this causes our users, but the huge increase in cost of membership necessitates this action.

Notary Public Service

Staff at Carpenter Library now have Notary Public training and are available to notarize documents. Please email or call the Reference Desk to arrange an appointment; refdesk@wfubmc.edu or 713-7100.

    Open J-Gate: OA Journal Portal

Open J-Gate is an Open Access journal portal that provides access to over 4200 freely-accessible full-text journals. Journals tracked by Open J-Gate include peer-reviewed journals, clearly marked throughout the portal, as well as professional and industry journals. Users may browse journals alphabetically or search for keywords in either journal or article titles. Advanced search features also enable limiting searches to peer-reviewed journals only; keywords in specific fields such as author, title, abstract, or institution; latest update; and by journal subject and sub-subject groupings. Open J-Gate is linked from the Scholarly Publishing & Open Access page of the Carpenter Library website. For more information, contact Molly Keener (6-4203 or mkeener [at] wfubmc.edu).

*Disclaimer: "Limit by: Publication year" under Advanced Search does not work properly, so please avoid using this feature until further notice!

    Congress supports public access

In a Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations bill passed late last week, the U.S. House of Representatives included a measure that would require all journal articles stemming from research funded by the National Institutes of Health to be made publicly accessible within 12 months of publication as a condition of receiving NIH funding. The Senate Appropriations Committee has approved a bill with a similar provision, which will go before the full Senate in coming weeks. Such moves indicate strong Congressional support for shifting the current NIH Public Access Policy from a request to a requirement, despite publishers' attempts to lobby against such a mandate. Although President Bush has indicated that he will veto the bill over funding disagreements, it is likely that mandating public access to taxpayer-funded research results will continue to be an aim of Congress.

    New Publishing Resource

Journal Info is an online database created by Lund (Sweden) University Libraries that assists authors in identifying appropriate journals in which to publish. Journal Info surveys 30 major databases for information on approximately 18,000 scholarly journals. Users can search for journals by title or subject. Information includes journals’ open access status, archiving allowances, hybrid options, cost per article, ISI impact factor, and indexing databases.

Journal Info is available from the Library’s Scholarly Publishing & Open Access resources page, and can be used in conjunction with resources such as the DOAJ - Directory of Open Access Journals, Instructions to Authors in the Health Sciences, and SHERPA/RoMEO – Publisher Copyright Policies & Self-Archiving to identify journals that will maximize an article’s accessibility and impact.

    Faculty of 1000-New Resource

Faculty of 1000 is an online research service that comprehensively and systematically highlight and review the most interesting papers published in the biological sciences, based on the recommendations of a faculty of well over 1000 selected leading researchers. This service provides scientists with a continuously updated insider's guide to the most important papers within any given field of research, highlights papers on the basis of their scientific merit rather than the journal in which they appear, offers the researcher a consensus of recommendations from well over 1000 leading scientists, and systematically organizes and evaluates the mass of information within scientific literature. Faculty of 1000 provides an immediate rating of individual papers by the authors' peers, and an important complement to the indirect assessment provided by the journal impact factor.

    Unbound Journals Relocating to Stacks

In order to prepare for upcoming library renovations, the current print journals (formerly in the upper reading room) will be shelved with their corresponding bound journals in the stacks. This move will take place the week of July 2, 2007.

Please check the catalog if you are unsure of the location of the title.

    Badge Access Coming

The Library will change to a badge-only access entrance in the near future. This was recommended by Security as a response to the Fire Marshall’s new interpretation of the rules governing emergency exits within the Library. Medical Center employees will need to swipe their badge to activate the Library’s main entrance door. Visitors will press a buzzer and be let in by the Library’s circulation staff. Visitors to the Library will need to produce identification and sign in at the Circulation Desk. We hope that no one will be greatly inconvenienced by these new measures, and we are hoping to create a greater degree of security than in the past.

    Pediatric Dermatology Slides

The Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives has organized the Pediatric Dermatology Slides Database and is making it available to the public. The database consists of over 200 slides taken by Dr. Carolyn Coker Huntley during her tenure (1956-1983) in the Department of Pediatrics at Bowman Gray School of Medicine. The collection illustrates a variety of conditions including dermatitis, seborrhea, psoriasis, and eczema.

Dr. Daniel Krowchuk (Department of Pediatrics) and Dr. Alan Fleischer (Department of Dermatology) reviewed slide titles and subjects for accuracy and currency. They also composed slide annotations to describe points of interest.
